Thomsen’s 2014 solo album. “The kind of music she’s making is well-crafted, sung beautifully, and recorded immaculately,” states the Duluth News Tribune review. “Fans of Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary might want to check this out.” The album is “deep and well written” proclaims The Reader, with “excellent songwriting and storytelling.” Thomsen's song "Precious Waters" received a Woody Guthrie Songwriting Award.
“In Everything Changes she has produced a self-portrait that is radiant with elegance, grace and honesty," writs the Duluth News Tribune. "It weaves its way into your soul." Sing Out! Magazine calls it “a powerful collection from a grounded talent.” The recording is “a patch-quilt of musical styles stitched together by Thomsen’s lonely alto voice and evocative writing style,” declares the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Thomsen's song “A Woman’s Place" won a Mountain Stage NewSong Contest Top Finalist award. “I Remember These” won a Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua's Songwriting Competition Top Finalist award.
This album is an introspective wandering through the season of winter. Standing outside on a cold, dark night, looking up at the glistening stars, staring down at the sparkling snow, heading inside in search of warmth and light, food and good cheer. Holidays sprinkle the path: Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas... Beyond the busy bustle and the wrapping hustle, we are left with a search for deeper meaning, a longing for home, for loved ones here, loved ones lost, for peace, for comfort, for wars to end, for hearts to mend. We light candles, sing songs, celebrate, mourn, dance, and somehow—deep in the dark and the cold—we wander inward, find a spark, kindle hope, and come home.
Three Altos has been a musical expression of deep friendship and family of choice. The power of being present to one another without artifice, defense or ulterior motives is expressed in the lyrics, melodies and the many musical performances on this recording and is what we believe can change this world. We hope that by bringing this to you we will inspire and feed the desire within you to connect deeply with another, with your own unique vision of a world whole and at peace, and with the Creative Spirit that moves through it all. —Amy Bernstein, Paula Pedersen, and Sara Thomsen's (Three Altos)
